Modern Materials, Built to Last: CertainTeed Landmark Roof in Seattle, Washington
Located just a few minutes from our Seattle office, this roofing project is a great example of how careful planning, quality materials, and proper installation come together to create a roof built to last. The homeowners selected CertainTeed Landmark shingles in Moire Black, one of our favorite colors because of its versatility. Its neutral appearance complements the home beautifully, providing a classic look that will continue to work well even if the homeowners decide to change the exterior paint color in the future.
As part of the installation, we removed the existing roofing and conducted a thorough inspection of the wood decking and attic ventilation. During the inspection, we identified an important area that needed additional attention: the chimney required a cricket. Chimney crickets are required on chimneys larger than 32 inches because they help prevent water, snow, and debris from accumulating behind the chimney. Without proper drainage, that trapped moisture can eventually contribute to roof leaks and structural damage.
We constructed the chimney cricket from lumber and properly integrated it into the roofing system, including valley metals and underlayment. The cricket is designed to divert water around both sides of the chimney rather than allowing it to collect behind it. Installing this feature correctly is an important part of ensuring the roof's long-term performance.
This Seattle home also features a flat TPO roofing section that ties into the CertainTeed composition roof. This type of transition required particular attention because TPO and asphalt shingles are two very different roofing systems, each with its own installation requirements. When these systems are not properly integrated, the transition can become one of the most vulnerable areas of the roof and a potential source of leaks. We used the appropriate transition materials and metals and made sure the installation was performed by our expert crew experienced with both roofing systems. Our team installed the CertainTeed Landmark shingles and properly welded and integrated the TPO membrane. The result is a carefully coordinated roofing system designed to provide reliable protection, proper drainage, and long-term durability.
